In 8th grade student completed their Classification Quiz today. We are continuing to use dichotomous keys to classify living things, both made up and real. For tomorrow students need to have their completed "Pamishan Creatures" classification activity. Students will be using their results to create a large tree map of all the creatures based on their physical features.

In 7th grade, today students handed in their Periodic Table posters. Unfinished posters will need to be completed and handed in by Thursday, November 1st. Tomorrow we will start poster presentations in class. For homework Mrs. Smith's homeroom needs to collect at least two food labels that contain elements from the periodic table in the ingredients list. Most ingredients will include compounds made of different elements and students should use their periodic table to look for familiar names. Labels are due on Wednesday. For Mrs. Visher's homeroom student need to complete the Bill Nye: Great Discoveries in Chemistry video questions. Questions should be answered in complete sentences for tomorrow.

In 8th grade students from both 4th and 5th hour have their Classification vocabulary due on Monday. 4th hour students also have their "Silly Science" dichotomous key activity due the Thursday and students in 5th hour need to read and complete notes for Chapter 2; Section 2: "Classifying Organisms" on pages 42 to 49.

In 7th grade we are continuing to learn about the Periodic Table. All students have received the items needed to start work on their posters. On Monday in class students will have the entire class period to research their element. They will need their "Get Interactive - WebElements" outline for class. On Friday Mrs. Smith's homeroom was given an assignment due on this Thursday. Students need to read pages 118 to 135 and complete questions 1a, d, c and 2a, b, c on pages 125 and 135 and complete "Melting Points in Groups of Elements on page 121. This same assignment will be given to Mrs. Visher's homeroom on Monday and be due on Friday, October 26th.

8th graders are showing a great understanding of classification! In 4th hour today students need to read and complete notes for Chapter 2; Section 2: "Classifying Organisms" on pages 42 to 49. In 5th hour students worked on classifying office supplies into groups based on what they did or how they are commonly used. 5th hour has no homework. All 8th graders have classification vocabulary due on Monday.

In 7th grade we continue to work on learning about the periodic table. Yesterday students received guides for their Periodic Table poster project as well as what element they will be working on. Today students received an outline to help them find the needed information as well as a website to use for research. The website I am encourage students to use is www.webelements.com. Also in class today students received paper for their poster. Students must use this color and not change or trade colors. Students also need to keep their papers nice and neat; posters cannot have folds or tears.

8th grade did not meet today because of MEAP testing. They have classification vocabulary due on Monday.

In 7th grade today students received the guidelines for their Period Element Poster project. All students also received what element they will be researching and creating a poster on. Tomorrow students will receive an online and website that will help them to locate the information they need to complete their poster. Complete posters are due on Monday, October 29th.
Tomorrow we return to a regular schedule

In 8th grade we began our unit on Classification. Students received a wordle (if you are unsure of what a wordle is, check out the science homepage www.paragonseventheighthscience.weebly.com) containing Classification vocabulary. Students need to have these important terms defined in their Science Notebook by Monday, October 22nd.

7th grade did not meet today, but do have their Properties of a "Missing" Element assingment due tomorrow.

In 8th grade we completed our review of Climatic Regions of the world. Tomorrow we begin our unit on Classification. Tomorrow students will also be receiving their Life Science textbooks.

In 7th grade we are continuing to learn about the different element groups of the Periodic Table. Today students received an assignment called Properties of a "Missing" Element. This assignment will be due on Wednesday. 7th grade will not meeting tomorrow because of MEAP testing.

Weekend Update

10/14/2012

Just a quick update for the weekend. Neither 7th or 8th grade had homework this weekend.
In 8th grade we will be beginning our unit on Classification. We will start by classifying familiar items based on their physical characteristics and relate to how this can help us to classify living things. We will continue to classifying living things and work on using dichotomous keys. Students will soon be using and creating dichotomous keys to classify different living and non-living things.
In 7th grade we will be continuing to study the Periodic Table of Elements. So far students have been introduced to Alkali Metals, Alkaline-Earth Metals and the Transition Metals. This week will finishing up the groups by looking at the Metalloids, Non-metals and the Noble Gases. As a class we have been discussing the idea that elements are grouped together because they react in similiar ways. This week we will go over the Periodic Table poster project. Information and directions for the project will be coming home this w

In class today 8th graders reviewed weather and water in our environment. Students looked at how air masses mix to create normal weather like changes in temperature, precipitation, and clouds as well as extreme weather like tornados and hurricanes.
8th graders have no homework.

7th grade did not meet today due to MEAP testing.

8th grade did not meet today for science due to MEAP testing.

In 7th grade we are continuing to learn about the different groups of the periodic table. Neither 7th grade hours have homework.

Today started our first day of MEAP testing. Both 7th and 8th grade tested today and to accommidate this schedule change both hours of 7th grade did not meet today. Tomorrow we will flip flop and 7th grade will have science in the afternoon.

In 8th grade we rewatched "Understanding Cells". Students completed the lesson 1 and 2 video notes in class together. For homework students will need to complete the video unit test for class on Thursday.
